What is a flat white?
When discussing the Flat White, you have to acknowledge the classic cappuccino. A traditional cappuccino is a 6oz beverage composed of three equal parts: 1/3 espresso, 1/3 steamed milk, and 1/3 foamed milk. However, throughout the '90s and the early 2000s, there was a trend towards frothier cappuccinos. Many people began requesting their cappuccinos to be "dry," which meant increasing the ratio of foam to steamed milk. This trend escalated to the point where it wasn’t uncommon to find a cappuccino that was almost entirely foam.
As a response to this trend, Australians and New Zealanders began ordering their cappuccinos with little or no foam, coining the term "flat white" for this variation.
Today, if you order a flat white, you'll receive a strong, espresso-forward drink in a 6oz cup. For those who appreciate the strength of a cappuccino but aren’t fond of the foam, the flat white might be the perfect choice. We look forward to serving you one at Cenizo!
